Hestia was the oldest daughter of Greek Cronus and Rhea. As one of the 12 Olympian gods, her name means the heart, and relates to the place in the house where the fire is maintained. As such, she was the keeper of the sacred fire on Mt Olympus. Although her Roman counterpart, Vesta, symbolised celibacy, Hestia’s energy resonates more with a desire to place spirituality above sensuality.
Unlike all the other goddesses, she was not depicted in traditional female form. She was a ‘presence’, a feeling; an essential energy of warmth and protection.
In Greek art, she was depicted on red figured vases wearing a veil and holding a sceptre or flower, sometimes seated, sometimes standing, but always in a pose of immobility.
Her Modern Energy
Similarly, women who are so focussed on a situation or their working life, may be sensing a feeling of being immobile, of being “stuck in a rut.” Their convictions keep them so absorbed in their work, they can’t imagine living any other way.
If Hestia is speaking to you today, you are wanting a break from the situation or cause that is devouring your every waking moment. The thought of a quiet, uncomplicated life (perhaps filled with enriching family relationships) is very attractive to you. It’s a life that beckons you to simply “be” – ideally in a familiar place that is comfortable and open to a self-contained existence on your own.
Reconnect With Your Inner Hestia
When Hestia’s energy is strong within you, this is the perfect time to break your obsessive patterns. Head outdoors to slowly tend your garden. Establish a habit of practicing yoga, either at a group class or in a safe haven where you feel connected with yourself. Pick up your pencils and sketchbook and doodle senselessly for hours on end. Allow yourself to write down random thoughts in a stream of consciousness.
By giving yourself permission to retreat into your shell, the introspection will open up to you an alternative path to travel. Naturally, as Hestia maps only a sensible plan for her followers, the path you will seem natural and obvious.
What Would Hestia Do?
… If she was in your situation, she would seek a more uncomplicated, enriching and contented path. She would establish healthy habits, and she would set aside time each day to potter around her home and haven. In the process she would learn how to simply be.
